Implication of theories

The imposition of certain structure like teacher, with a very high level of motivation would be a result of how students are taught to cooperate to be on- task behaviors or pro-social behaviors that are totally less natural to occur because the natural expected behaviors are the off task and the antisocial ones. For that goal to be accomplished the teacher must rely on specific theories where students can learn from it at the practical level and take into account what are the most powerful and mindful implications of theories to make sure that students will be engaged totally in the application.

All of the theories’ concepts will have an effect on what will happen in the class and as teachers we need to make sure that we are aware of what we are teaching and how it becomes clear to students. A variety of implications can be used in a specific theory in order to succeed in making learning more meaningful in which students become more engaged in the learning tasks.

Starting from the behavioristic psychology, according to Skinner any behavior in
education can be learned if we have the right conditions. The concept of behavior modification is replacing the undesirable behavior with the more desirable ones.

Systems are means to set up a balance of consequences by which behaviors are shaped. A good behavior is rewarded, encouraged and positively reinforced however bad behavior is punished, discouraged and negatively reinforced. To manage the behavior, you must manage the balance of consequences so teachers must be aware of consequences.

When students get good grades this behavior must be positively reinforced by clapping for him/her, giving a high five, telling a teacher about how much proud you are
of him/her while he/she is listening. It’s important to reward your child’s/student’s improvement rather than focusing only on perfect results. If they did better than the last time, they must know that you notice the change. For example I can still praise the partial success of my students when they come to school and hang their coats and bags in the appropriate place but they forgot to clean when they leave. Also parents play an essential role in offering praise for their children, you can space out your reinforcement when your child mastered a new skill like getting ready for school on time lately, parents in their turn must let him know that they notice the change by saying “Wow, we are so impressed, we will go to the playground tonight”. So the more often you can offer praise, the more motivate your students will be to repeat the behavior.

Destructive accidental positive reinforcement should be avoided. For example, the child begs and pleads until his parent allow him to go outside and in that way the child learn that whining helps him to get what he wants and encouraging him to whine in the future. Another example is when a student is not asked to do his homework because he is sitting quite all the time in the class, in that way the teacher is reinforcing the idea that doing homework is like being punished. So teachers need to be very mindful of the punishment they impose on students because a destructive punishment would have a bad outcome on the learner.

Motivation implication is an essential factor in the learning process it teaches self-discipline which is part of character development, since the motivated student has the inner strength to learn, discuss and to discover. Once they get motivated to achieve something by doing the tasks they will eventually exert their full effort, time, and energy. Learners at first need extrinsic motivation and once they develop it they will realize the value of what they are learning and become intrinsic motivated

Students are intrinsically motivated because they engage in learning for its’ own sake and not to receive external rewards or to avoid some external punishment. Also students are more likely to be motivated if the class materials is related to their needs and involves their interest. For example a student is learning new vocabulary word because he loves to read, participating in sport because it’s fun and not doing it to win an award, learning new languages because you experiencing new thing, not because your job
requires it.

However extrinsic motivation is learning because of external factors and focused purely on the outside rewards like competing in sports for trophies, completing work for money, that can lead students away from an inherent love of learning but as teachers we prevent this by prioritizing intrinsically motivated learning the classroom. Teachers must reinforce this motivation by giving positive feedback on students’ assignment to encourage them that they can do better, in addition you as teacher must share your love of a subject, if you show why you love learning your students are more likely to catch your enthusiasm, too. Also by sparking students’ curiosity by praising those who present projects.

“Curiosity is in great and generous minds, the first passion and the last” said by Samuel L. Johnson. This quote is a great reminder that if students are motivated to learn, we can set them up for a lifelong love of learning. As teachers we have the power to help them find the passion for learning.
